Culinary historian, Professor Roland Rotherham, and top chef, Simon Smith, have been performing live, entertaining historical cookery shows at The Lichfield Garrick Theatre for many years. The shows contained a variety of delicious, and sometimes unusual, recipes stretching back thousands of years. With a UK tour planned and no publication in print containing the recipes, we were approached by The Lichfield Garrick to publish a book that could be sold after the shows. The book was funded in full by sponsorship from The Lichfield Garrick Theatre who chose to use the jacket flaps and some internal pages to advertise the venue.
We worked closely with the authors to achieve text that reflected the fun yet informative nature of the live cookery shows for which they are well-known. Every recipe in the book then had to be cooked at Simon Smith’s restaurant and photographed by an experienced food-photographer. The result is a fabulous looking book with mouth-watering photographs and witty, historical text to accompany the recipes.
The book was printed in Slovenia as it was required urgently to meet the show performance dates. Although this book was originally just for sale after the live shows, we still gave the book an ISBN. This proved a good move as it is now being sold through bookshops and online retailers. The book is now warehoused with Gardners Books Ltd – the UK’s largest book wholesaler – and distributed into UK bookshops.
